Blade Runner Designer Syd Mead Dies at Age 86

Blade Runner designer Syd Mead dies at 86

It is with great sadness that ComingSoon.net (via The Hollywood Reporter) must report that the famous concept designer Syd Mead passed away at the age of 86. He leaves her husband Roger Servick.

Mead's work in the science fiction genre was unparalleled, generating iconic visuals for films like Blade Runner, Tron, Aliens, Star Trek: The Movie, 2010, Short Circuit, Timecop, Johnny Mnemonic, Mission: Impossible III, Elysium, Tomorrowland and Blade Runner 2049. He also provided design work for the Yamato 2520 and Turn A Gundam anime. His work was influenced by his work in industrial design, lending a reality to even the most extravagant extravagant worlds. He will surely be best remembered for the dark, neon-filled city views of Ridley Scott's classic 1982 Blade Runner, which is considered one of the most visually influential films of all time.

A documentary about his life, titled Visual Futurist: The Art & Life of Syd Mead, was released in 2006.

Here are some of the tribute paid by the acclaimed artist…

Rest in peace Syd Mead. Your art will last.

After a lifetime of seeing beyond the horizon, Syd Mead has traveled beyond it. I hope everything he is seeing astonishes you as much as his visions amaze many of us for so long … #sydmead #Futurism #Science fiction #Technology #Project #VFX pic.twitter.com/kctVt36cTZ

Who was responsible for this atmosphere? Syd Mead.

But it wasn't just the Blade Runner. If you've seen almost every major science fiction movie in the last 30 years, you've probably seen his work, and if you haven't seen it directly, you've seen effects inspired by it. #SydMead pic.twitter.com/pPIahJMGyO

Many years ago, I was sitting alone next to Syd Mead and his partner at a dinner party for an event I was talking about. They were kind, engaging and insightful.

Syd's ideas were the origin of my line, which bright futures culturally invite their own destruction. https://t.co/kWWEoD2fRA

RIP Syd Mead (1933-2019), legendary designer and futuristic look. Among his many contributions to film, he was the chief mechanical designer of Turn A Gundam. Tomino specifically sought his services and went through great efforts to facilitate the process. pic.twitter.com/5TGw9tFbit
