The Lady Eve

Barbara Stanwyck hisses, Henry Fonda fumbles, and Preston Sturges revolts in one of the all-time donut balls, a perfect blend of comic zing and fainting romance. But when the con artist falls in love with her brand, her attitude becomes a game of hearts – and she is determined to win it all. One of a series of unparalleled comic wonders that Sturges wrote, directed and produced as part of a dazzling 1940 series, this intelligence battle farce is perhaps his most rewarding job, tempering his brilliant intelligence with a touch of tender poignancy. provided by the sensational Stanwyck at its peak.

Wedding History

A love story about divorce. A marriage falling apart and a family coming together. Wedding Story is a hilarious and distressing, well-observed and deeply compassionate film by acclaimed writer and director Noah Baumbach. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson present tour-de-force performances as Charlie, a charismatic New York theater director, married to his work, and Nicole, an actress who is ready to change her own life. Their hopes for a friendly divorce fade as they are drawn to a system that pits them against each other and forces them to redefine their relationship and family. Featuring bravery, twists by Alan Alda, Ray Liotta and Laura Dern – who won an Oscar for his performance here – as the trio of lawyers who preside over the legal battle, Marriage Story (nominated for six Oscars, including best image) is a work of intimacy and comprehensiveness that, ultimately, invokes hope amid the ruins.

Cherry Taste

The first Iranian film to win Palme d'Or, this austere and emotionally complex drama of the great Abbas Kiarostami follows Mr. Badii (Homayoun Ershadi), middle-aged, as he drives through the mountainous periphery of Tehran in search of someone who agrees to discard his body after he commits suicide, a taboo under Islam. Prolonged conversations with three passengers (a soldier, a seminarian and a taxidermist) raise different views of mortality and individual choice. Operating at the same time as a closely watched realistic story and a fable populated by archetypal figures, Taste of Cherry challenges the viewer to consider what is often overlooked in everyday life.

Blu-ray Special Edition features include:

  • New 4K digital restoration with uncompressed mono soundtrack
  • Project, 39-minute sketch of Abbas Kiarostami, 1997, for Taste of Cherry, made with the son of director Bahman Kiarostami

War of the Worlds

A mysterious, meteor-like object has landed in a small California town. All clocks stopped. A fleet of bright green UFOs hovers menacingly across the globe. The Martian invasion of Earth has begun, and it appears that nothing – neither military power nor the scientific knowledge of nuclear physicist Dr. Clayton Forrester (Gene Barry) – can stop him. In the expert hands of gender experts George Pal and Byron Haskin, the H.G. Wells classic of the end of civilization receives a frightening update from the Cold War era, complete with technicolor and visionary Oscar-winning hallucinatory effects. Coat of arms of iconographic images of the 50's science fiction, The War of the Worlds is an influential triumph of the visual imagination and a still unsettling document of the wonder and terror of the atomic era.
