How Long Are Han, Luke & Leia Actually Together Onscreen?

How long are Han, Luke and Leia really together on the screen?

Prior to the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, star John Boyega cast a bit of shadow on the previous movie, The Last Jedi, for failing to reunite Rey, Finn & Poe's trio until the final minutes of the movie. Boyega wanted Sequel Trilogy's dynamics to reflect the incredible chemistry that Han, Luke, and Leia had in the Original Trilogy … but is that a little misleading?

"It was hard for all of us because we were apart," Boyega said in an interview with Hypebeast. “I think in the original Star Wars movies there was a lot more of a trio feeling that was essentially Luke's journey, but Han and Leia had a strong dynamic. I don't know how quickly we can establish this long-term dynamic with (Episode) Nine. I feel that even after three movies, we still don't know them as much as we do Han, Luke, Leia. And maybe it's a great opportunity to get to know them a little more. "

Mark Hamill also expressed similar concerns about Han, Luke and Leia not appearing together at ST to Den of geek earlier this year, stating, "I just thought, Luke will never see his best friend again. You look at it in a self-centered way. I said it was a big mistake that these three people never got together at all. I think I was wrong because no one seems to care! I need to stipulate that I care, but it really didn't affect the general public. Luke, Han and Leia will never be together again and probably never work with Harrison again.

Obviously, people love and love OT Trio, and in fact they have recently been the first in the "Who are the best movie threes" poll! But were they together that much? Luke and Han were together in A New Hope, while Han and Leia forged their romance along Empire Strikes Back, and they all got together during the Return of the Jedi.

We decided to take a timer and see how long the whole trio has in all of AT, and it's MUCH LESS than you really remember. WAY LESS. And no, we don't include the Star Wars Christmas Special. Remember that this is a rough estimate of the eyeball and is based on actual full scenes with all three characters, as opposed to individual photos…

How long are Han, Luke and Leia really together on the screen?

A New Hope (1977): 10.5 minutes

The Empire Strikes Back (1980): 1.5 minutes

The Return of the Jedi (1983): 10.5 minutes

So there you have it. Of the 377 minutes of the first three films of the George Lucas trilogy, only 22.5 of those minutes feature Han, Luke and Leia in scenes together. So about 6% of these three movies. This is not to take away the power of their chemistry or their impact, but we imagine that much of their collective pop culture memory comes from promotional material or simply from the good vibes they emitted in their short adventure in those three films. It seems fair to guess that Obi-Wan, Anakin and Padme share a similar amount of time at Prequels, but they had little chemistry or shared experiences / ties as a trio. There is no chance of these three hugging each other after a big battle, etc.

Although we still have to stop Rey, Finn & Poe's showtime together on The Rise of Skywalker, we imagine that – paired with the minute and change that goes on in The Last Jedi scenes – the timing is comparable to OT's Trio screentime. If the impact is similar, there is still time for debate and time to decide, but Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac are still young and can always be reunited in the future. Unfortunately, we can't say the same about Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, so all we can do is treasure the little time spent on screen together.
