The game's synopsis reads: "Set in the Cold War era, The Outlast Trials will allow players to face the horrors they expect alone or with fellow testers."
While news that a third franchise game is underway has certainly sent fans by surprise, they will unfortunately have to moderate their expectation as the game is still in production.
"Now that we've done our proof of concept, it's time to focus on content creation, variety and content," said David Chateauneuf, co-founder of Red Barrels.
The first game, released in 2013 with great reviews, saw players explore Mount Massive Asylum's demented psychiatric hospital as a journalist Miles Upshur as he delves into how he was overwhelmed by his homicidal patients and the mysterious experiments being conducted there. Thanks to the popularity of the first game and great reviews, the publisher / developer started working on a sequel, which hit the shelves in 2017.

The follow-up followed journalist Blake Langermann while he and his wife are trapped in the Arizona desert while investigating the murder of a pregnant Jane Doe. The two are separated after the helicopter crash and Blake must cross the neighboring village, which is inhabited by a dangerous sect seeking to make an initial jump in the apocalypse. Although seen as a small step from its predecessor, due to its repetitive gameplay designs and perceived difficulty, it still received very positive reviews from critics and players.
