Lulu Wang Defines Nicole Kidman's Drama as Next Project
According The Hollywood Reporter, director Lulu Wang is following her critical film The Farewell with Amazon's original The Expatriates. Wang will partner with executive producer Nicole Kidman on the project.
"When I first read Janice Lee's diasporic novel, I was immediately drawn to the rich characters and the intimate global exploration of life in modern Hong Kong," Wang said in a statement. "I am thrilled to work with Nicole Kidman and Amazon, whose commitment to bold and distinctive narrative makes them the perfect partners for translating this atmospheric story onto the screen."
Wang wrote and directed two feature films, Postumum 2014 and the aforementioned The Farewell starring Awkwafina. The latter has received great reviews and has grossed $ 19.6 million worldwide since its launch in June. The expatriates will mark Wang's first venture into the television world.

The Expatriates is based on a book by Janice Y.K. Lee – who is also credited as the series' consulting producer – follows a group of expat women in Hong Kong. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, told the paper that her story “weaves an addictive tapestry that follows a group of complex women and their lives as outsiders in Hong Kong. It is a convincing exploration of the strength of these women as they persist in struggles with marriage, career, parenting, and unimaginable loss. "
The series will be written by Alice Bell (The Beautiful Lie, The Slap), with Kidman and Per Saari, executive producer of Blossom Films, along with executive producer Theresa Park.
"I am very excited about the Blossom-Amazon collaboration. Expat is just the beginning of our common goal of creating delicious stories with something meaningful to say about the world," added Kidman.

Amazon's full description of Expatriates reads as follows:
“Against the backdrop of the vertical city of Hong Kong, The Expatriates is a drama series that explores the life of a close-knit expat community: where wealth is celebrated, friendships are intense but intentionally temporary, and personal lives, deaths and marriages are publicly performed – then recounted with joy. There's Margaret, a world-renowned American architect who struggles with the unshakable suspicion that something might be wrong with her latest project – an ambitious skyscraper that already graces the Hong Kong skyline – until an unexpected event improves her life; Mercy, a Korean-American college student with a questionable past in search of a new life, is quickly embroiled in an unforgivable scandal; Hilary, a British expat who longs for a child despite her uncertain marriage, later becomes interested in local customs and make-believe identities in a deliberate attempt to change her destiny; Tammy, a high-level alpha-expat who is surprised when her husband's second Chinese family appears at her door; Barbara, whose decadent lifestyle hides a clock; Franny, an Australian expat loyal to anyone with lunch, facing an existential crisis; and Olivia, a local Chinese socialite who experiences a humiliating loss of status. This is a delightful world of unusual alliances, sincere truths, and mysterious superstitions; a place where fortunes are made and lost, families divided and reunited, identities made and then remade in search of an extraordinary life.
