The Last of Us Producer says HBO series will expand game history
In a new interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin spoke about adapting the live-action series from HBO’s The Last of Us, revealing the painstaking process of developing a series based on a beloved franchise, such as the popular horror game.
Mazin, who will act as a writer and producer in the next series, assured fans that they have nothing to worry about, because the long-awaited project is definitely in good hands, as he and game creator Neil Druckmann are just planning to expand or improve the story of the original game, rather than making changes that will undo it.
“I think fans of something are concerned that when the property is licensed to someone else, these people don’t really understand it or are going to change it,” explained Mazin (via IGN) “In that case, I’m doing it with the guy who did it, and so the changes we’re making are designed to fill and expand things, not to undo, but to improve.”
He also added his excitement for the project: “We are creating a new image and also rethinking what already exists to present a different format. It’s like a dream come true for me. I’m a little scared, because many emotions related to this game are quite intense. I think I’m probably going to hide in a bunker for a while, because you can’t make everyone happy!
