The Witcher producer responds to fan criticism of the series

The series executive producer The witcherLauren S. Hissrich went to Twitter to chat with fans of the wizard Geralt de Rivia saga. The showrunner not only celebrated that Andrzej Sapkowski's books were in the spotlight again (not to mention that CD Projekt RED games received a boost in sales), but also responded to some criticism from the public.

Speaking to a network follower, Hissrich noted that the team "intensely debated" some aspects of the plot about how to best adapt a series of short stories sometimes without a logical sequence, as well as the need to present certain characters before the original moment.

"Here's our logic: Adapting short stories that are important to world building and sequentially adapting the multiple encounters between Geralt and Ciri in 'The Sword of Destiny' would mean we couldn't introduce Ciri (at least) until season two." , he explained.

I hear you. And we debated this intensely. Here's our rationale: to adapt the short stories that were important to world-building, and then to sequentially adapt Geralt and Ciri's multiple meetings in SoD meant that we wouldn't introduce Ciri until (at the earliest) season two. https://t.co/wpDi96hupV

Can be worse

"It makes sense if you're a fan of the original books. That's how it goes, and it's beautiful! But for the purpose of the television adaptation: if viewers invest only in Geralt in the first season, and then be introduced to Yennefer and several seasons after finding Ciri, it's potentially confusing to say: forget the monster hunt. Take the last two or three years of what you're seeing and get it out. Do you know that little girl you just found? She's the key to this whole universe and will be the center of the whole story to follow "

Which makes sense, if you're a fan of the original books. That's how it's done, and it's beautiful! But for the purpose of television adaptation: if viewers are investing solely in Geralt for S1, and then get introduced to Yennefer, and several seasons later meet Ciri –

The producer also celebrated that, having sacrificed various moments and characters in the adaptation, many people are turning to books now. "As writers, we understand that – even if we're rational – fans may not agree with the changes we've made. And that's fine! We had to make tough choices and we didn't get it right. But it's important for fans to know that those choices they were not made anyway. Never, "he concludes.

Produced by Netflix and starring Henry Cavill (the current Superman), The Witcher has had eight initial episodes commissioned and is now renewed for season two.
